Read:

Genesis 3:8-11; John 3:16; 1 John 4:10; 1John 1:9

Think: When my children were little one of them spilled paint on something ‘precious’. Their reaction was to hide somewhere and pretend it hadn’t happened. I knew it had but then I also knew that it didn’t affect my love for them. After finding them I asked what was wrong and tearfully they told me of the accident, after hugs and reassurance we went together to clean up the mess and get on with life. After all it was just a thing and my child was more important that any ‘thing’. The two things we need to remember are that we don’t need to hide from God and that He loves us. That is what really matters in our lives. With my child I knew what had happened but until they were ready to tell me I couldn’t help them cope with their upset. God not only knows what has happened but saw it coming and knows how to deal with it. Trying to hide from God is not only futile but it stops us from getting on with life as we become stuck in that place.

God knows we are not perfect and He wants to help us move on with life but first we have to admit to it and deal with where we are. Often, as with children, the act of admitting to something frees us to move on. God knows we need to admit it more than He needs to hear it. With Adam and Eve God was fully aware of what had happened and yet He still asked Adam so that they could admit to their wrong doing and move on.

Thankfully He also loves us more than enough to cope with any upsets we have. God made us to love and be loved. It makes a difference to our way of being when we hear that we are loved. Throughout the Bible God tells and shows us how much He loves us. When we realize this truth it will change your world.

Do: Look back at John 3:16 and substitute your name for “the world”, make the verse personal to you. Say it out loud to yourself and know that it is the truth. Write it down on a piece of paper and take that with you wherever you go, reread it and let it soak in … that God loves YOU!

Pray: Thank you Father, for your love. Thank you that no matter what I do I am able to come to you and admit my sins so I can move on through your grace and forgiveness. Please help me to sense Your love around me as I travel through this life and to show others the difference this can make in how we live. Amen

Read:

Revelation 3:15; 1 Kings 18:21

Think: Recently I was lucky enough to go and see Cirque du Soliel at Marymoor Park. With most of the audience I was hugely impressed and spent much of the time with my hand over my mouth not wanting to breathe in case it distracted someone. This was particularly the case with the tight rope walkers who not only danced and jumped rope while up there but they also rode bicycles with someone balanced on their shoulders. These men were committed to what they were doing from the instant they began, putting themselves into it 100% and not thinking of anything else. As a result of their focus and dedication they were great at what they did and even when they began to lose their balance they were able to regain their focus and correct their path.

We need to not ‘sort of’ follow God but like the tight rope walkers make a decision and commit to it giving it our all following God regardless of how difficult or unsettling the view. I was once told that by sitting on the fence all I would get are splinters in a painful place!! We cannot sit on the fence about following God or about being the person God wants us to be and being available to Him and others.

Do: As so many of us drink coffee today you have an excuse! Take the time to sit and drink a coffee, hot or cold drink or your choosing. While you drink it think about how the flavor changes as the temperature of the drink changes, warmish coffee is never quite the same nor is a room temp milkshake. How do you need to heat up for God today giving God 100% and doing something just because He wants you to? Is there a part of your life where you want to be ‘greater’ that you can ask God to help you with?

Pray: Lord, I pray that we grow in Your strength so that we may hold firm to our decisions and not become lukewarm. We want to become focused on You and Your purpose for our lives becoming more like You and Your son. We want to show a commitment that makes others wonder what we have and wish to learn more about you. Help me to become the person you want me to be. Amen

Read:

Philippians 3:17; Joshua 24:15; Acts 1:8

Think: With the new law regarding driving while on the phone I have become more aware of what people are doing while driving. How often do we see someone in traffic that seems to think they can’t be seen by anyone when inside their car? Whether it is us or another driver the assumption is that no one else can see or be affected by the actions in the car…. so putting on makeup, talking on a cell phone, reading books etc all become acceptable. Sadly it is not the case and others ARE affected by our driving, good or bad, and distractions we perform while driving have many consequences.

Today Pastor Ben talked about following God and what to teach our kids. For some that may feel like a moot point if you do not have children but like those drivers what we do is seen by others even if we are not aware of it. As my children have grown up they have learned from not only their parents but others who are part of our lives. You may not feel you have an influence over children but we all have people in our lives that are affected by how we live and follow God.

Do: Look around you today at the people that you may influence even in small ways and think of how you can show them what it means to be living a life that honors God. Thank God for those in your life who have influenced and shown you what it means to be living for God in their lives. Perhaps now is a good time to contact them and let them know the positive spiritual influence they are… don’t be surprised if you are contacted too!

Pray: Dear Father thank you that you give us fellowship with others to not only teach us how to live for you but to encourage others in their journey. Please help us to be more aware of who is around us and how our actions affect others even in our busiest times. Lord, please bless those who are there at the right time to influence our lives.

Daily Devotional: Wednesday, May 5Rooted series Timberlake Church Redmond Washington

Speaker: Ben Sigman

Theme: Leaving a Legacy

Weekend Music links on iTunes: All Because of Jesus by Fee; Run by Hillsong United; Glory by Hillsong; Til I See You by Hillsong.

READ: Proverbs 25:11; Proverbs 27:6; Proverbs 4:20-24

THINK: Helen Keller once said, "Once I knew only darkness and stillness... my life was without past or future... but a little word from the fingers of another fell into my hand that clutched at emptiness, and my heart leaped to the rapture of living."

Though in a different form than Helen Keller, many people would acknowledge that they have felt a kind of darkness and emptiness. Many would say that they have felt cut off from others, isolated and alone. But, with the kindness of
another's words, hope begins to take root.

Words are so powerful. In fact, they bounce around in our heads all day long. Some words are echoes from the past. Some words are whispers of the future. But all have meaning. All have impact. All words can influence for the better or for the worse.

What if we were able to harness the power of words for our benefit and the benefit of others? What kind of influence would we have on the world around us if we used our power in godly ways? What keeps us from saying the things that need to be said? Sometimes we are afraid of conflict, confrontation, setting boundaries with others or asking for what we need. The truth is, that as we speak what is true and loving to ourselves and to those around us, we cooperate with the Holy Spirit in setting ourselves free, and setting others free too.

When I get less than positive feedback from a friend, it stings. But it’s like the sting of a strong medicine that heals an infection. I need to hear those things so I can live, and grow and thrive. I need to say those things to the people around me so they will live too.

DO: Name something that the Holy Spirit is asking you to say to yourself or someone else

PRAY: God, I want to hear and know the truth. I want to be able to communicate the things that you have put in my heart to say. Help me to overcome my fears, and to say what I need to say.
